Generation Three
4. FILIPPO FRANCESANTONIO3 FUSCO (Angelo Maria2, Pascale1) was born on 23 May 1849 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy, and died on 21 October 1901 in Niles, Trumbull, Ohio. He married ROSALIA ANZILLOTTE on 24 June 1871 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy. She was born about 1849 in Italy. Filippo Francescantonio Fusco was a contadino when he married Rosalia Anzillotti. He probably saw only a future of farm labor, so considering the gaps in the children’s births, he probably went back and forth to the United States before bringing his family over in 1890. In the 1900 census, he claimed to have come to the United States in 1878.1
In the United States, Filippo Francescantonio was known as Frank, and he opened up a grocery at 323 Langley in Niles. As this was also his home address, he probably lived above or behind the store, and in 1900, his brother Filippo Gaetano, known as Lippo, and his new wife were living next door. Frank did well, and when his niece, Rosa Maria (née Fusco) Tauro, was arrested for murdering her husband’s accused murderer, Frank posted her $1,000 bond (worth about $37,000 at the end of 2024). When she fled to Italy and the bond was forfeit, Frank “died of worriment.”2
Known children of Filippo Francescantonio Fusco and Rosalia Anzillotte were:
i. MARIANTONIA4 FUSCO was born on 15 November 1872 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy, and died on 13 June 1938 in Niles, Trumbull, Ohio. She married her cousin GIAMBATTISTA4 FUSCO (Pascale3, Nicola Maria2, Pascale1) about 18 April 1891, probably in Niles, Trumbull, Ohio. He was born on 1 August 1869 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy, and died on 20 March 1934 in Niles, Trumbull, Ohio.3
ii. MARIANNA4 FUSCO was born on 29 October 1876 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy, and died on 26 February 1910 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. She married ANTONIO GODINO about 1892. He was born on 12 April 1865 in Italy, and died on 13 December 1943 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania.4
iii. MADDALENA4 FUSCO was born on 6 December 1878 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy.5
iv. LEONARDO4 FUSCO was born on 22 September 1884 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy, and died on 10 June 1940 in Warren, Trumbull, Ohio. He married CRISTINA CANTISATO on 22 September 1906 in Manhattan, New York, New York. She was born about 1884 in Italy.6
v. FILOMENA4 FUSCO was born on 3 October 1885 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy, and died on 7 October 1885 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy.7
5. GIOVANNI ANDREA3 FUSCO (Angelo Maria2, Pascale1) was born on 29 October 1852 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy, and died on 10 September 1905 in Niles, Trumbull, Ohio. He married MARIA FILOMENA GUARINI on 4 February 1875 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy. She was born about 1855 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy.8
Giovanni Andrea, a laborer known as John in the United States, his wife, and his son Fabio, also a laborer, were living at 421 Grant in Niles in 1902, and by 1904, they were living at 331 Oak. In 1906, John’s widow was still living at 331 Oak with her daughter Anna, but Fabio had moved down the street.9
Known children of Giovanni Andrea Fusco and Maria Filomena Guarini were:
i. MARIA ANTONIA4 FUSCO was born on 18 January 1876 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy. She married GIUSEPPE LAPOLLA on 12 October 1895 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy. He was born about 1872 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy.10
ii. ROSA MARIA4 FUSCO was born on 5 August 1878 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy. She married first, DOMENICO ANTONIO TAURO, on 2 July 1896 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy. He was born about 1867 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy, and was stabbed to death on 18 June 1899 in Niles, Trumbull, Ohio. She married second, GIUSEPPE SCHETTINI, between 1910 and 1920, probably in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island.11
iii. ANGELO MARIA4 FUSCO was born on 18 January 1882 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy, and died on 6 February 1882 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy.12
iv. MARIA GIUSEPPA4 FUSCO was born on 17 March 1883 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy.13
v. PIETRO ANTONIO4 FUSCO (known as Fabio) was born on 28 June 1885 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy.14
vi. MARIA4 FUSCO was born about 1899, probably in Niles, Trumbull, Ohio.15
6. FILIPPO GAETANO3 FUSCO (Angelo Maria2, Pascale1) was born on 6 August 1858 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy. He married first, MARIA GRAZIA ADDOLORATA LAPOLLA, on 19 November 1881 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy. She was born about 1862 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy. Filippo Gaetano married second, FLORENCE MODACIO (also known as Providenza), on 7 September 1898 in Trumbull County, Ohio. She was born about 1881 in Italy.16
Filippo immigrated to the United States about 1885, but probably went back and forth to Italy as he and his wife had more children there. According to the 1900 census, his son Angelo came to the United States with him as an infant, which was probably inaccurate. The enumerator has Angelo being born in 1893 (which would have been after the 1885 immigration date), but the boy was also listed as being sixteen years old, which would put his birth at about 1884.17
It appears Maria Grazia Lapolla remained in Tursi, and Filippo remarried almost a year after his last known child with Maria Grazia was born. Perhaps he divorced his wife in the United States for abandonment and then married Florence. Filippo and Florence were married by a Justice of the Peace, probably because the Catholic Church would not recognize Filippo’s dissolution of his first marriage. While Florence swore she was eighteen years old when she married, she probably was about seventeen.18
On 26 September 1910, Florence Fusco was granted a divorce and given custody of “four children ranging in age from 9 years to 13 months.” Filippo and Florence had seven children; five were reported as living when the census was taken in 1910, but only four of them were living with their mother. Pasquale was probably the nine-year-old mentioned in the divorce decree and the missing fifth living child in the census. The newspaper was probably wrong, and Florence was granted custody of all five children, though Pasquale could have been living with his father or other relatives when the census was taken.19
Florence married one of her boarders, Pascale Minnitte, on 18 July 1912 in Stark County, Ohio, and sometimes her children from her marriage with Filippo Fusco were referred to by the Minnitte surname.20
Known children of Filippo Gaetano Fusco and Maria Grazia Addolorata Lapolla were:
i. MARIA ANTONIA4 FUSCO was born on 29 August 1882 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy, and died on 22 September 1886 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy.21
ii. ANGELO MARIA4 FUSCO was born on 3 July 1884 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy.22
iii. PIETRANTONIO4 FUSCO was born on 15 April 1889 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy. He married ROSA MARIA SCHETTINO in March 1912 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy. She was born on 1 May 1888 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy.23
iv. ISABELLA4 FUSCO was born on 26 December 1897 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy.24
Known children of Filippo Gaetano Fusco and Florence Modacio were:
i. PASQUALE4 FUSCO (known as Patrick) was born on 16 December 1899 in Niles, Trumbull, Ohio, and died on 21 April 1924 in Toledo, Lucas, Ohio. He married MARIE POLAND on 13 February 1923 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan. She was born about 1899 in Michigan.25
ii. MARIA ANTONETTA4 FUSCO (also known as Mary A. Minnitti) was born on 22 February 1903 in Niles, Trumbull, Ohio, and died on 13 January 1997 in Canton, Stark, Ohio. She married DOMINICK SPOTLISON on 28 October 1922 in Stark County, Ohio.26
iii. ANNIE4 FUSCO was born on 13 November 1904, probably in Niles, Trumbull, Ohio, and died on 2 July 1991 in Canton, Stark, Ohio. She married FRANK MARCELLI.27
iv. NELLIE4 FUSCO (also known as Nellie Minnitti) was born on 13 May 1908, probably in Niles, Trumbull, Ohio, and died on 16 October 2006. She married JOHN R. MARCHESCIANO around 1954, probably in Canton, Stark, Ohio.28
v. SAMUEL4 FUSCO (also known as Samuel A. Minnitti) was born on 20 March 1910, probably in Canton, Stark, Ohio, and died on 6 May 2004 in Canton, Stark, Ohio. He married MARY GATTUSO on 21 September 1935, probably in Canton, Stark, Ohio.29
7. PASCALE3 FUSCO (Nicola Maria2, Pascale1) was born on 20 May 1843 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy, and died on 20 March 1934 in Niles, Trumbull, Ohio. He married LUCREZIA ESPOSITO on 17 September 1865 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy. She was born about 1843 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy, and died on 20 October 1926 in Niles, Trumbull, Ohio.30
In 1900, Pascale and Lucrezia were living with their son Giambattista (Nicolas) in Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio. They were living with their son, Giovanni (John), and his family at 309 Langley in Niles in 1908. John was running a saloon at the address, and Pascale was a clerk, possibly working for his son Nicolas, who was running a grocery a few doors down the street at the same location where his cousin and father-in-law, Filippo Francescantonio3 Fusco (Angelo Maria2, Pascale1) had operated a grocery. But John’s family was growing, and he probably didn’t have room for Pascale and Lucrezia. In 1911, they were living in their own home in Youngstown, and Pascale was working as a laborer. In their old age, Pascale and probably Lucrezia suffered from dementia and were again living with John. Sadly, Lucrezia wandered off. John offered a $300 reward (worth about $5,000 at the end of 2024), but Lucrezia was not found before she died of exposure.31
Known children of Pascale Fusco and Lucrezia Esposito were:
i. NICOLA ROSARIO4 FUSCO was born on 7 October 1866 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy.32
+ 8 ii. GIAMBATTISTA4 FUSCO (known as Nicolas) was born on 1 August 1869 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy, and died on 20 March 1934 in Niles, Trumbull, Ohio. He married his cousin MARIANTONIA4 FUSCO (Filippo Francesantonio3, Nicola Maria2, Pascale1) about 18 April 1891, probably in Niles, Trumbull, Ohio. She was born on 15 November 1872 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy, and died on 13 June 1938 in Niles, Trumbull, Ohio.33
iii. GIOVANNI ANDREA4 FUSCO (known as John) was born on 6 September 1872 in Tursi, Matera, Basilicata, Italy, and died on 12 November 1946 in Warren, Trumbull, Ohio. He married CONCETTINA CURCI on 8 October 1906 in Trumbull County, Ohio. She was born about 1878 in Italy and died on 21 November 1960 in Warren, Trumbull, Ohio.34
