The Descendants of Michael Kane and Mary Phillips of Ireland
Who Lived in Holyoke, Massachusetts
First I need to acknowledge that without the help of Maryann Zelenak, I would have embarrassed myself. Michael Kane, the husband of Mary Phillips, was listed as born in Ireland on many of the records, but on his death certificate, his son Patrick said he was born in Clinton, Massachusetts. Patrick’s sister Anne also reported her father was born in Clinton, Massachusetts on her marriage record. And finally, Patrick was the informant on his sister Anne’s death record and said she was born in Clinton, Massachusetts.
Since these were all common names, I was sure there were two Michael Kanes and Mary Phillips living in Holyoke around the same time with children with the same names. The first Michael Kane was born in Clinton, Massachusetts and his children were born in Massachusetts. The second was born in Ireland and his children were born in Ireland.
Full credit goes to Maryann Zelenak for solving the conflict. She discovered that Michael Kane and Mary Phillips married in Holyoke in 1872 and then went back and forth between Holyoke and Ireland. Most of the children were born in the Kilmore Erris Parish, and Zelenak gave me the references for her information.
Again, thank you to Maryann Zelenak for saving part one of the kinship project from disaster.

The Descendants of Michael Kane and Mary Phillips of Ireland
Michael Kane died today at the House of Providence hospital, after a week’s illness. He was removed to the hospital last Thursday. Mr. Kane had been a resident of the city for the past 35 years. His wife died three months ago. Two daughters, Mrs Michael O’Donnell and Mrs Kennedy-Sullivan, and a son, Patrick Kane, all of this city, survive him. The funeral will be held Monday morning from his late home, 37 Chestnut Street, with requiem mass at St. Patrick’s chapel. – Holyoke Transcript, Saturday, 28 January 1905.1
1. MICHAEL KANE was born about 1849 in Ireland, the son of Richard Kane and Ann.2 His son Patrick didn’t know much about his father. He was the informant on the death record and reported his father was born about 1858 in Clinton, Massachusetts, and Patrick did not know the names of his grandparents.3
The death record puts his birth around 1858, the gravestone lists his year of birth as 1849.4 Michael’s 1872 marriage record was probably more accurate as Michael and his soon-to-be wife, MARY PHILLIPS, probably provided the information. Michael Kane was born in Ireland about 1849, and he married Mary Phillips on 28 April 1872 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts.5 Mary was born about 1852 in Ireland, the daughter of John Phillips and Jane.6
A year after the marriage, Michael and Mary, both of Ireland, had a son named Michael Kane born on 2 May 1873 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts.7 But Michael was actually born in Dooyork, Mayo, Ireland on 3 April 1873 to Michael Kane of “Holyoak America” and Mary Kane “formerly Phillips,” and the birth was registered in the District of Bangor, Union of Belmullet, County Mayo, Ireland.8 It appears Mary was probably in her parents’ home when the child was born, then returned to Holyoke where the birth was registered in February 1874 as 2 May 1873 in Ireland.9 There does not appear to be a deliberate attempt to claim Michael was born in Holyoke, but a transcription error between the town record and the state record.
Mary (Phillips) Kane was back in Holyoke by the beginning of 1874 or earlier. Her second child was probably Jennie, also known as Jane Veronica, who was born around March 1876.10 No birth or baptismal record for Jennie was found in Mayo, Ireland where her brother Michael was born. Nor was a record found in the Holyoke birth register for 1875 or 1876, but her marriage records say she was born in Holyoke.11 The next two children were born in Ireland. Jane, also known as Annie, was born on 23 December 1876, and Patrick was born on 28 February 1879.12 It appears Michael Kane and Mary (Phillips) Kane immigrated with their family in 1880, probably coming through Canada and returning to Holyoke where many from their Irish community were living.13
Perhaps with all the back and forth between Holyoke and the Belmullet area of Ireland, Michael missed being counted in the 1880 and 1900 censuses. According to his children’s Irish birth records, he was a farmer while living there, but no record was found that listed his profession in Holyoke.14 While Michael and Mary were living at 37 Chestnut Street at the time of their deaths, the property was an apartment building and they were not listed as residents in 1900, nor were they listed in the Holyoke City Directory in 1904.15
Most likely Michael Kane was a laborer in one of the paper mills which were the predominant industry in Holyoke.16
Michael Kane died on 28 January 1905 in Holyoke, Hampton, Massachusetts, and was buried in the Saint Jerome Cemetery.17 His wife, Mary (Phillips) Kane, was born about 1849 in Ireland and died on 26 October 1904 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts, and was buried in the Saint Jerome Cemetery.18 Their daughter Jane Veronica (Kane) (O’Donnell) Bora died in 1943 and was buried with them.19

John left Holyoke around 1929 and moved in with his widowed brother-in-law, Theodore E. Bora, in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.59 Theodore owned a gas station and John was working for him, perhaps it was there he met VIOLET LEONIDAS ROME who was also living in Northampton.60 John and Violet married at the end of 1930 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.61 Neither John nor Violet graduated from high school.62 John had attended the first year of high school before dropping out, Violet had a 7th-grade education.63 Ten years later, the Great Depression was ending and the Kane family was doing well. They were renting an apartment at 40 Market Street where they paid $15 a month.64 John was a bartender and had worked 52 weeks in 1939 and earned $1,092.65
On 15 February 1942, John reported to the Draft Board at the Old High School in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.66 He was 5 foot 9 ½ inches 190 lbs. with blue eyes and brown hair.67 John lived at 49 Walnut Street, Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts, and was working at Rice’s Lunch on Bridge Street.68

In 1950, John and Violet’s oldest child, John Jr. was not living with the family, probably because he was serving in the Korean War with the Marines.70 John was a machinist at a pulp mill, probably Doeskin Products, and Violet was a laundry helper at the Veteran’s Hospital.71
John died on 24 September 1953 leaving a widow and children John Jr. age 22, [Living Daughter] age 12, and Bernard age 6.72 After John’s death, Violet did not remarry.73 In 1954 she was living at 41 Williams St.74 In 1960, the family was living at 49 Orchard Street.75 Violet was working as a baker at Federal Bake Shops, John Jr. was working as an orderly at The Cooley Dickinson Hospital, Jacquelyn was working as a stenographer, and Bernard was about 14 years old.76 Between 1960 and 1963, John Jr. married Frances J. and was living with her at the family home at 38 Orchard Street.77 Violet had moved to the rear of 25 Union Street, 17-year-old Bernard was probably living with her, and [Living Daughter] had married and was living with her husband.78

Sisters Jennie (Kane) O’Donnell and Annie (Kane) Sullivan were boarders in the same household but the person who provided the information for the 1900 census said Jennie was born in Massachusetts and her father was born in Massachusetts, and also said Annie was born in Ireland, her father was born in Ireland, and she immigrated in 1880. Using the search engine at FamilySearch a search for a Mary married to a Michael living in Holyoke did not result in an entry that was Mary (Phillips) Kane and Michael Kane in the 1880 or 1900 census. Since the United States did not track immigration through Canada until 1894, and since Ireland and Canada were part of the British empire, the family probably chose this route to return to Holyoke and there would be no record of the border crossings. See, Marian L. Smith, "By Way of Canada: U.S. Records of Immigration Across the U.S.-Canadian Border, 1895–1954 (St. Albans Lists)," published in Prologue Magazine, 32 (Fall 2000), Genealogy Notes, reprinted at National Archives (https://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2000/fall/us-canada-immigration-records-1.html : accessed 1 October 2022). Maryann Zelenak, another researcher familiar with the family, said a large number of Belmullet immigrants settled in Holyoke and recommended two books that discuss their history: Within the Mullet by Rita Noland and Where the Sun Sets by Fr. Sean Noone.
