There were many cases of immigrants returning home for a time, especially the Irish. It makes our research more difficult. I noted that Michael sr. Was born around 1849 in County Mayo, one of the places that suffered the most during the Famine. Interestingly, he was born in a town next to Doolaugh, the site of one of the most terrible events of the Famine that is commemorated with a march that follows the same route Mayo’s starving people walked to get food. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doolough_Tragedy. Michael came from a family with means, or he had a rough start in life.

Thank you for the Irish social history. I was in tears watching a PBS documentary about the famine. I didn't think about it when I was researching the Kane family. Thanks for bringing him more to life.
