The Descendants of Michael Kane and Mary Phillips of Ireland
Who Lived in Holyoke, Massachusetts
First, I need to acknowledge that without the help of Maryann Zelenak, I would have embarrassed myself. Michael Kane, the husband of Mary Phillips, was listed as born in Ireland on many of the records, but on his death certificate, his son Patrick said he was born in Clinton, Massachusetts. Patrick’s sister Anne also reported her father was born in Clinton, Massachusetts, on her marriage record. Finally, Patrick was the informant on his sister Anne’s death record and said she was born in Clinton, Massachusetts.
Since these were all common names, I was sure there were two Michael Kanes and Mary Phillips living in Holyoke around the same time, with children with the same names. The first Michael Kane was born in Clinton, Massachusetts, and his children were born in Massachusetts. The second was born in Ireland, and his children were born in Ireland.
Full credit goes to Maryann Zelenak for solving the conflict. She discovered that Michael Kane and Mary Phillips married in Holyoke in 1872 and then went back and forth between Holyoke and Ireland. Most of the children were born in the Kilmore Erris Parish, and Zelenak gave me the references for her information.
Again, thank you to Maryann Zelenak for saving part one of the kinship project from disaster.

The Descendants of Michael Kane and Mary Phillips of Ireland
Michael Kane died today at the House of Providence hospital, after a week’s illness. He was removed to the hospital last Thursday. Mr. Kane had been a resident of the city for the past 35 years. His wife died three months ago. Two daughters, Mrs Michael O’Donnell and Mrs Kennedy-Sullivan, and a son, Patrick Kane, all of this city, survive him. The funeral will be held Monday morning from his late home, 37 Chestnut Street, with requiem mass at St. Patrick’s chapel. – Holyoke Transcript, Saturday, 28 January 1905.1
1. MICHAEL KANE was born about 1849 in Ireland, the son of Richard Kane and Ann. His son Patrick didn’t know much about his father. He was the informant on the death record and reported his father was born about 1858 in Clinton, Massachusetts, and Patrick did not know the names of his grandparents.2
The death record puts his birth around 1858, the gravestone lists his year of birth as 1849. Michael’s 1872 marriage record was probably more accurate as Michael and his soon-to-be wife, MARY PHILLIPS, probably provided the information. Michael Kane was born in Ireland about 1849, and he married Mary Phillips on 28 April 1872 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts. Mary was born about 1852 in Ireland, the daughter of John Phillips and Jane.3
A year after the marriage, Michael and Mary, both of Ireland, had a son named Michael Kane, born on 2 May 1873 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts. But Michael was actually born in Dooyork, Mayo, Ireland, on 3 April 1873 to Michael Kane of “Holyoak America” and Mary Kane, “formerly Phillips,” and the birth was registered in the District of Bangor, Union of Belmullet, County Mayo, Ireland. It appears Mary was probably in her parents’ home when the child was born, then returned to Holyoke, where the birth was registered in February 1874 as 2 May 1873 in Ireland. There does not appear to be a deliberate attempt to claim Michael was born in Holyoke, but a transcription error between the town record and the state record.4
Mary (Phillips) Kane was back in Holyoke by the beginning of 1874 or earlier. Her second child was probably Jennie, also known as Jane Veronica, who was born around March 1876. No birth or baptismal record for Jennie was found in Mayo, Ireland, where her brother Michael was born. Nor was a record found in the Holyoke birth register for 1875 or 1876, but her marriage records say she was born in Holyoke. The next two children were born in Ireland. Jane, also known as Annie, was born on 23 December 1876, and Patrick was born on 28 February 1879. It appears Michael Kane and Mary (Phillips) Kane immigrated with their family in 1880, probably coming through Canada and returning to Holyoke, where many from their Irish community were living.5
Perhaps with all the back and forth between Holyoke and the Belmullet area of Ireland, Michael missed being counted in the 1880 and 1900 censuses. According to his children’s Irish birth records, he was a farmer while living there, but no record was found that listed his profession in Holyoke.6

Michael Kane died on 28 January 1905 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts, and was buried in the Saint Jerome Cemetery. His wife, Mary (Phillips) Kane, was born about 1849 in Ireland and died on 26 October 1904 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts, and was buried in the Saint Jerome Cemetery. Their daughter Jane Veronica (Kane) (O’Donnell) Bora died in 1943 and was buried with them.7
Known Children of Michael Kane and Mary Phillips were:

2. PATRICK KANE was born on 28 February 1879 in Blacksod, Mayo, Ireland, the son of Michael Kane and Mary Phillips. His family came to the United States around 1880 when he was an infant, and he attended school at St. Jerome Institute for Boys in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts. He married CATHERINE O’REILLY on 8 May 1900 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts. They probably met at work. They were both from Ireland. Kate had arrived around 1897 and worked at the paper mill (most likely in one of the sixteen American Writing Paper mills), where Patrick was a laborer, and Kate cut rags.12

Upon the death of his wife, Patrick moved in with his daughter Catherine and her husband Richard Stearns and lived with them until his death on 9 July 1961. He is buried with his wife in the Saint Jerome Cemetery in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts.13
Known Children of Patrick J. Kane and Catherine O’Reilly were:
i. MARY ROSE KANE was born on 9 November 1900 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts, and died on 28 January 1929 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts. She married her aunt Jennie’s stepson, THEODORE E. BORA, on 7 April 1920 in Hartford, Windsor, Vermont. He was born on 5 October 1901 in Fairfield, Chicopee, Hampden, Massachusetts, and died on 3 July 1962 in Hanover, Grafton, New Hampshire.14
+ 3. ii. JOHN JOSEPH KANE was born on 29 April 1902 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts, and died on 24 September 1953 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts. He married VIOLET LEONIDAS ROME at the end of 1930 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts. She was born on 15 October 1908 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts, and died on 17 July 1988 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.15

She married JOHN GALLAGHER in 1927 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts. He was born in 1899 in England and died on 11 October 1953 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts.17
v. CATHERINE VIOLA KANE was born on 28 July 1909 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts, and died on 16 July 1972 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts. She married MAYNARD (also known as RICHARD) GOULD STEARNS on 22 September 1930 in Newport, Sullivan, New Hampshire. He was born on 1 May 1908 in New York, New York, and died on 20 August 1964 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts.18
vi. PATRICK JEROME KANE was born on 28 February 1914 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts, and died on 22 June 1968 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts. He married MARY about 1952.19
Third Generation
3. JOHN JOSEPH KANE was born on 29 April 1902 in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts, the son of Patrick Kane and Kate O’Reilly, who were living at 41 Chestnut Street in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts. Dad was a paper maker, and both he and his wife had been born in Ireland.20
John left Holyoke around 1929 and moved in with his widowed brother-in-law, Theodore E. Bora, in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts. Theodore owned a gas station, and John was working for him. Perhaps it was there he met VIOLET LEONIDAS ROME, who was also living in Northampton. John and Violet married at the end of 1930 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts. Neither John nor Violet graduated from high school. John had attended the first year of high school before dropping out, Violet had a 7th-grade education. Ten years later, the Great Depression was ending, and the Kane family was doing well. They were renting an apartment at 40 Market Street, where they paid $15 a month. John was a bartender and had worked 52 weeks in 1939 and earned $1,092.21
On 15 February 1942, John reported to the Draft Board at the Old High School in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts. He was 5 feet 9 ½ inches and 190 lbs. with blue eyes and brown hair. John lived at 49 Walnut Street, Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts, and was working at Rice’s Lunch on Bridge Street.22

In 1950, John and Violet’s oldest child, John Jr., was not living with the family, probably because he was serving in the Korean War with the Marines. John was a machinist at a pulp mill, probably Doeskin Products, and Violet was a laundry helper at the Veterans’ Hospital.23
John died on 24 September 1953, leaving a widow and children: John Jr., age 22, Jacquelyn, age 12, and Bernard, age 6. After John’s death, Violet did not remarry. In 1954, she was living at 41 Williams St. In 1960, the family was living at 49 Orchard Street. Violet was working as a baker at Federal Bake Shops, John Jr. was working as an orderly at The Cooley Dickinson Hospital, Jacquelyn was working as a stenographer, and Bernard was about 14 years old. Between 1960 and 1963, John Jr. married Frances J. and was living with her at the family home at 38 Orchard Street. Violet had moved to the rear of 25 Union Street, 17-year-old Bernard was probably living with her, and [Living Daughter] had married and was living with her husband.24
Known Children of Patrick J. Kane and Catherine O’Reilly were:
i. JOHN JOSEPH KANE was born on 15 February 1931 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts, and died on 14 April 2001 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts. He married FRANCES J. ii. CATHERINE M. KANE was born in 1937, probably in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts, and died in 1937, probably in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.26
iii. JACQUELYN THERESA KANE was probably born on 9 November 1940 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts, and died on 3 June 2024 in Hatfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts. She probably married BOROWSKI between 1960 and 1963.27
iv. BERNARD FRANCES KANE was born on 20 November 1946 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts, and died on 3 April 2009 in North Bergen, Hudson, New Jersey.28

There were many cases of immigrants returning home for a time, especially the Irish. It makes our research more difficult. I noted that Michael sr. Was born around 1849 in County Mayo, one of the places that suffered the most during the Famine. Interestingly, he was born in a town next to Doolaugh, the site of one of the most terrible events of the Famine that is commemorated with a march that follows the same route Mayo’s starving people walked to get food. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doolough_Tragedy. Michael came from a family with means, or he had a rough start in life.
Thank you for the Irish social history. I was in tears watching a PBS documentary about the famine. I didn't think about it when I was researching the Kane family. Thanks for bringing him more to life.
